Farmer Story of the Week: Is Winter here? We had our first frost last night and most of us farmers were out in the dark until the wee hours bringing in all that we could harvest. Some of our produce got hit hard last night – especially sensitive things like summer squash. Some down by the river got down to 25, while other farms squeaked by with 31 degrees. This week is the best time to order in bulk and get it into the dryers and freezers for the winter!

How to tell when melons are ripe and the LocalFarmsFirst.com market is still open until Monday at 7am

Greetings local food lovers!
The market is open from Thurs 5pm-Monday 7am.
New this week: Dreamy rainbow carrots, First of the season Celery, Lemon Cucumbers, and sweet Alisa Craig Onions from Mark and the gang at Thistle Whistle Farm.
Featured this week: $30 cases of special Paula Red Apples from Jeff and his team at Delicious Orchards.
I asked Mark from Thistle Whistle how he feels that you can best tell when a good melon is ready. Some are ready when the neck of the vine withers, some when the first leaf starts to die. Mark’s trick is to smell the flowering side of the melon, and see if it smells “melony”.

LocalFarmsFirst.com - Pig Harvesting and Market is open

Greetings local food lovers!
The market is open from Thurs 5pm-Monday 7am.
New this week: Fantabulous heirloom Sweet, Bell and Jalapeno Peppers, Cabbage, Gourds, Sweet Onions and Carrots from Mark at Thistle Whistle Farm.
Featured this week: Tomatoes from Jack at Hillside Acres, Pumpkins from Carlson, and Honey Crisp Apples from the Kropps.
On Thursday, Jason and I brought two of our pigs to Hotchkiss Meats for slaughter and processing. I cried my eyes out as I fed Bacon and Sausage their last meals of swiss chard, clover, egg shells, tomatoes, lettuce, sweet corn and peaches. While I have considered a life without meat, I did read the other day that tofu often has a much higher carbon footprint than meat, and certainly eating tropical fruit is not the answer either. I did also read that grass-fed animals can have lower fat and cholesterol than chicken. But it sure doesn’t make the reality any easier. RIP my good friends, I’ll miss you.

Thank you to everyone who attended the sold- out farm to farm bike tour lead by Alison Gannett, founder of LocalFarmsFirst and everyone who came down to Paonia to support our farmers at Mountain Harvest Festival. This is such a special time of year in our valley, friends leaving apples or pears on your porch, friends inviting you over to share the bounty. This community makes me feel so lucky to be always revelling in such abundance. We are glad to be able to share this feeling with you when you order from us and we expand the parameters of our valley to include all of you up in Crested Butte and Gunnison. Thanks for being part of our foodshed and thanks for your support.
